With the passing of Jack Layton, Canada has lost a passionate promoter of care for the poor and marginalized, a man whose optimism and conviction contributed significantly to Canadian public life.

While some Canadians disagreed with his policies, all Canadians will remember how he consistently challenged us to consider the importance of participating in politics and the value of coming together to debate critical issues in the search for better laws and public policy.

In his battle with cancer he exhibited remarkable determination. Who can forget the images of the past election of a passionate and determined Jack crossing the platform with his cane raised in the air, leading his party to its best electoral success and the admiration of many across the political spectrum.

Indeed, his last political hour was his best.

While he did not speak much about faith and politics, he did affirm and understand the important role that faith plays in the shaping of public policy and of the significant participation of communities of faith in caring for vulnerable peoples. Of all party leaders, he was the most faithful attendee of the National Prayer Breakfast.

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada expresses its deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to his wife Olivia, his children and the New Democratic Party.
