Liberal MP Alan Tonks, York South – Weston, stood in the House of Commons Wednesday evening to proclaim the Liberal Party’s opposition to Bill C-384, a proposed amendment to the Criminal Code, that would legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide.
Tonks was speaking in the context of a motion presented by Conservative MP Harold Albrecht, Kitchener – Conestoga, that asks the government to clarify the Criminal Code provision against counselling someone to commit suicide. Debate in the House made it apparent that there is all party agreement to support Albrecht’s motion, which makes it incongruous that there would be any support for C-384.
Tonks speech is good news as the Conservative Party has already voiced its opposition to C-384. We look forward to the defeat of this bill.
